CUBES OF LIGHT

PROJECT NAME: Sports Complex

LOCATION: Alès, France

PRODUCT: Facade Danpatherm K7 Opal and Clear Softlite, 2,100 m²

ARCHITECT: Agence Didier Richard, France

CONTRACTOR: MCM Mériodionale de Constructions Métalliques, France

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:

THE NEED: According to the project architect Richard Didier, the brief called for a new sports complex to serve the local schools and sports clubs within the city limits of Alès. The major constraint, was to deliver a multifunctional complex on a strict budget, as stipulated by the city’s mayor.

THE DANPAL SOLUTION: Richard Didier describes their solution as, “We designed two bright translucent boxes, which are neutral during the day and then liven up at night. We’ve achieved this, by the use of embedded strip lights that silhouette the adhesive cut-outs of players stuck on the walls”. The two L-shaped buildings are completely clad in a Danpalon based Danpatherm K7 system. Danpal’s Softlite finish was chosen for both the clear and opal coloured panels, and then reinforced with added protection derived from a H.P (High Protection) co-extrusion. The first building houses both a handball and basketball court, necessitating a 7m high roof. The second building has a 4m high internal space, and is used by various martial arts practitioners.

THE RESULT: The use of the translucent Danpalon based system, allows for the internal spaces to be continuously lit up by natural light throughout the day. This limits the use of artificial lighting, an effective cost savings measure. The K7 systems also provides the thermal insulation required to keep the interior warm enough for use. According to Richard Didier, “fifteen degrees is sufficient for activities to take place within the building. The space is not heated when unused and if it gets too hot, a natural ventilation system incorporated in the roof, handles the extraction of warm air”.
